People often complain about personal finances, debts and economic problems. They say they are struggling with money problems and, as a result, always feel stressed. Money and employment have been found to be the top two sources of stress for approximately 75% of people living in the United States, for example.

Islamically, the solution to our financial worries is simple and straightforward. If we were to minus all the money we spend simply to impress others, and restrict our spending to things that benefit us, a great part of our financial worries would no longer remain. This relates to everything, from spending on small things to major spending.

Was all that money spent on a family wedding really necessary? Did you decorate your house or made enhancements so that people say good things about you, or was it for your own self? Do you drive your current car because it is needed and comfortable for you, or just so that you can show off? What was the need to spend so much money on an expensive private number plate on your car? The expensive clothes you wear, are they just to show off or you actually need to wear them? What is the intention behind having multiple expensive handbags, shoes and designer clothing? Do you go on expensive holidays just to brag before others, or you actually do it for your own self?

These and other similar questions are questions we all need to ask ourselves. We should always remember that we will never be able to make people happy. One day they will praise us and the next they will criticise us. No one is going to return home after attending your amazing lavish wedding and write a book about it. It would be wise to spend all that money on your self and your new spouse. Use that money to go on a holiday or start saving up for a house.

Once we stop worrying about what people will say and our image in the eyes of people, and worry more about our status with Allah, the more we will become happy and content in this life and have a good hereafter too.

Empathy is generally seen as a positive trait, but new research finds that's not always the case, especially when showing empathy can lead to a loss of respect.

In the last few months, Muslims have got married without inviting 2000 guests, without feeding an army, without helicopters, without 10 Ferraris and 2 Rolls Royce, without hiring out the largest wedding halls in Britain, without 7* honeymoons, and without spending 100k for a week of partying — and guess what? We survived, we enjoyed it, and we didn't have to live with the fear of impressing people that will never be happy.

Nikah is so blessed and Allah places such barakah within it that we don't need all of these material things to truly feel inner happiness, contentment and peace. We just need gratitude.

The key to any successful relationship is how you make an individual feel. It’s not so much what you do for them, what you buy them or what you say to them, but it’s how they feel when they are around you. If you appreciate and accept them, you will bring out their best which will make them want to spend time with you.
