Iran president: we must prepare ourselves to stand firm

Iran's foreign minister said Tehran remained in close contact with intermediaries on discussing ideas for ensuring implementation of an Iranian proposal aimed at ending the war in the Middle East.

Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran continued to give diplomacy a chance to succeed and raised the possibility of the seven-day plan proposed by Tehran being completed in less than a week if implemented.

President Masoud Pezeshkian also said Iran was working to end a state of "neither war nor peace."

Pezeshkian added: "Our dear leader said in a message yesterday that the situation of neither war nor peace must be brought to an end. This is a very significant message. We are now working to make this process and this idea a reality, but until that happens, we must also prepare ourselves to stand firm under any circumstances. And standing firm under any circumstances requires us to prepare ourselves for what comes next."

Telegram post media South Korea's military has said that the DPRK fired around 10 ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast on Thursday.

The short-range missiles were launched at around 3:30 a.m. GMT from around Wonsan on the DPRK's eastern coast and flew about 250 km, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

South Korea was strengthening surveillance and maintaining readiness for additional launches, while closely sharing information with the United States and Japan, it added.

Japan's Defence Ministry said the DPRK had launched what could be a ballistic missile and that it did not appear to have landed within Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

South Korea's presidential National Security Office convened an emergency meeting to assess the security implications.

DPRK has yet to comment.

Telegram post media Israel's pivotal general election remains in the balance with more than two-thirds of the votes counted. The bloc based around Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is ahead of the opposition grouping, but still short of a majority.

Voters turned out in the highest numbers in decades to give their verdict on Netanyahu. With around 77% of votes tallied, Israeli media forecast Netanyahu's bloc of right-wing, far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties winning 54 seats in the 120-seat parliament, with Eisenkot's Change bloc predicted to win 49.

The strongest gains, with a predicted 17-seat total, went to Arab Israeli parties whose voters turned out in soaring numbers against Netanyahu.

Aerial footage: Aftermath of high-speed train crash in Spain, dozens dead

At least 30 people were killed when two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday, the second deadly accident in less than a year on the line connecting Madrid to the southern Andalusia region, regional authorities said.

Footage from regional Castilla-La Mancha television showed a derailed train with several carriages remaining on an elevated section of track while twisted metal, broken panels and wreckage could be seen strewn across an embankment beneath the line.

A person briefed on the disaster said an express operated by Spanish train operator Iryo stopped near Toledo due to a signal fault, on orders from infrastructure manager ADIF, when it was struck by another high-speed train on.

A spokesperson for the Spanish emergency services said the collision occurred "at 8:54 a.m." (07:54 GMT) between "two trains, one belonging to [private operator] Iryo and the other to [national company] Renfe," near Urda station in the Castile-La Mancha region.

The crash caused two Iryo wagons to derail, a government spokesperson for the Castilla La Mancha region said, adding that the cause and number of injuries were still being determined.

"There are at least ten dead, and it is possible that this number will increase," said Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the regional authorities, shortly after. By 10:40 GMT the regional government said the death toll had hit 30.

Eisenkot: 'Israeli public voted against the continuation of Netanyahu’s tenure'

Former Israeli general Gadi Eisenkot who became Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s top political rival, said that he was determined to lead Israel to a new era, despite exit polls showing deadlock in the country's national election.

Exit polls showed Eisenkot's opposition bloc running neck and neck with Netanyahu's camp, leaving neither side with a clear path to power.

The projections pointed to a setback for Netanyahu's coalition and potentially weeks of political wrangling to form a government, though the deadlock could allow Israel's longest-serving prime minister to remain in power as caretaker during coalition negotiations.

Final results could take days.
