ASTU Provides Life Skills Training and Career Counseling for First-Year Students

The Women and Social Affairs Executive Office, in collaboration with the Students’ and Skill Development Coordinator Office at Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU), organized a life skills and career counseling training program for newly admitted first-year students.

The two-day training, held at the ASTU Multipurpose Hall from October 10–11, 2026, aimed to help students adapt to university life, develop essential personal and social skills, and make informed decisions about their academic and professional futures.

During the opening ceremony, Prof. Yadessa Melaku, Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the participants and noted that joining a university marks an important new chapter in their lives. He emphasized the importance of life skills training in helping students navigate university life effectively and achieve their academic and personal goals.

Prof. Yadessa also encouraged students to participate in extracurricular activities alongside their academic studies, highlighting the role of such activities in developing essential life skills and competencies.

The training focused on strengthening students’ communication, teamwork, leadership, time management, problem-solving, decision-making, and emotional resilience skills. It also covered reproductive health awareness and drug abuse prevention. In addition, the program provided career guidance to help students identify their interests, recognize their strengths, set clear goals, and explore future career opportunities.

Participants expressed their appreciation for the program, describing it as timely, relevant, and impactful. They also expressed a strong interest in seeing similar training programs organized in the future to further support their personal development, academic success, and career readiness.

This initiative reflects ASTU’s commitment to promoting students’ holistic development and equipping them with the essential skills and knowledge needed to succeed both within and beyond the university environment.
